The Seniors played their final game this season at The High School of Glasgow 7s last week, where the standard of hockey did not disappoint. The team were confident after winning the plate at our own 7s tournament last week, and Thalia's brilliant goal against Morrison's Academy in our first game led to us securing the win. Romily, Liv, and Fern's teamwork in the second game enabled us to secure an early lead against St Aloysius' College. We conceded in the last minute of the game despite some epic saves by Tess, meaning the final group game was vital in gaining a place in the plate final. Despite a tough match and eventual loss against hosts Glasgow High A, Laura's stellar defence earned her Player of the Tournament. Very few players made it past our strong defenders of Leila, Isla G, Scarlett and Kitty-Mae, with Lucy clearing the ball away whenever the opposition got close. 12 schools from across the county took part in the LEGO League Cumbrian Finals last week, hosted at Lakes College. The team fought intensely but were pipped at the post, coming away with runner-up medals for the second consecutive year. Miss Stockdale said: “I was delighted by our team's performance. Well done to all the girls who played in the J3&4 Inter House Hockey. The matches were very competitive, and it was impressive to see all the girls getting involved and showing some good skills and tactics. Aidan beat Cuthbert 3-0 in the first match, with Darci and Liberty passing the ball out wide to get the ball down the pitch. Lulabelle was great in defence and managed to clear the ball out of the D on many occasions. Cuthbert then played Bede. Francesca and Beth distributed the ball well up to Annie who then scored all 4 of Bede's goals to take the win. Minnie and Anna played well in defence for Cuthbert. The final was between Aidan and Bede. This was a very even match, and it was Bede who scored first. Despite Aidan's best efforts it looked like Bede would take the win up until the final few minutes when Aidan scored 3 quick goals, one from Charlotte who received the ball from the push back and ran straight through to score! This meant Aidan took the overall Hockey House trophy with Bede 2nd and Cuthbert 3rd. Well played girls!

Junior 1 and 2 had a fantastic visit to Carlisle Cathedral this week. They were able to explore this beautiful building, including ‘resting under the stars’ to view the glorious ceiling! They searched for familiar scenes from the Bible in the stained-glass windows and especially looked out for representations of the Christmas story. The children then had time, in the Undercroft, to create their own artwork depicting the nativity scene with their own ideas about the true meaning of Christmas. A great opportunity for reflection as we get close to the season of Advent.

The Green watch crew from Carlisle West Fire Station spent some time with our VI Form this morning to discuss road safety. They spoke about the main causes of serious crashes, the possible consequences and potential penalties before watching a video interview with a parent who had lost their son in a fatal crash. Afterwards, the crew demonstrated, with the help of two VI Form ‘casualties’, how they cut people free from cars during their rescues. We’re very grateful for their time this morning and hope they gave our VI Form lots to think about as we move into the Winter driving months.

Down the left Emily S & Chrissie worked well together & on the right Issy & Nina managed to beat their defenders to cross the ball into the D. Rose, was excellent as sweeper. Megan Mc was great in goal, making numerous saves. The second half was 0-0. A great game. The U15's played strongly throughout their game. Ellen & Evie both scored great goals after team efforts getting the ball into our attacking D. Lauren, our goalkeeper, was rarely put under pressure but when she was, she cleared the ball away. Paige showed great fitness as sweeper and played well in both attack & defence. The team were delighted to take the win. Well played girls!

In a game where the score did not reflect the standard of play & despite having 8 penalty corners that we were unable to convert due to the high standard of goalkeeping, the game concluded in a 4-0 loss after we conceded in quick succession at the beginning of the 2nd half. Junior 1 had a fantastic trip to Talkin Tarn last week. We were practising map skills we had been learning in the classroom by completing orienteering trails around the tarn. We were fortunate to have a beautiful sunny day, and, as well as the orienteering activity, we could enjoy looking at all the swans and ducks on the tarn and appreciate the many dogs being walked by their owners!

The new first form travelled to Brathay in Ambleside for a three-day residential last week. They spent time getting to know each other and their tutors while challenging themselves and supporting their peers. They reflected on what it meant to be part of the Austin Friars community and how our core values of Unitas, Veritas and Caritas can play a part in their daily lives.

Kindergarten and Pre-school had a wonderful morning with Green Watch at Carlisle East Fire Station. They loved seeing a firefighter slide down the pole; they saw where all the uniforms were kept, saw the fire engines and heard a test signal for if there was a real fire. They had a look at all the different equipment onboard the fire engines. They even got to sit in the fire engine, listen to the sirens and have a go with the hose. Thank you so much to all the firefighters for a wonderful experience!

Well done to the 1st XI who came back from 2-0 at half time to beat Durham School 5-2 on Saturday another fantastic result from the young side who are learning with every game. Player of the match was Fern, with goals coming from Sophia (2) Thalia and Fern (2). The U16’s also had a good game also being down 2-0 at half time we managed to pull one goal back via a nice bit of linked up play from Ellen to find Evie who scored from a fantastic angle in the bottom corner. Time was against us and while we did seem to dominate play, we couldn’t quite pull back level with a lapse of concentration in defence Durham managed a scrappy 3rd right on the full time whistle. Player of the game was Evie.

Our Under 9 team got the rugby season underway with a friendly against Hunter Hall this week. It was the boys' first school rugby game, and I am pleased to report that they all played exceptionally well in defence and attack. All of our boys are from Junior 1, and every one of them stepped up very well and was comfortable playing against older opposition. Overall, a very pleasing performance from the boys – well done!

We had lots of teams playing Hockey v Barnard Castle on Saturday. The 1st XI won their close game, 2-1. The 2nd XI team showed huge potential despite a 4-1 loss. It took a while for our U12, U13 & U14 teams to settle into their games, but by the 2nd half, everyone was getting involved with more pace & confidence. Well played girls!

At the end of term, our Young Engineers, ‘The Austin Flyers’, travelled down to The Greenpower Formula 24 Event held at Croft Race Circuit to showcase their skills in designing, building, and racing their electric car. The event consisted of several stages, including design presentations, scrutineering, and two endurance races. Despite being brought back into the pit on the back of a recovery vehicle during the first race due to tyre wear, and a critical chain malfunction during the second race, ‘The Austin Flyers’ demonstrated resilience and determination in tackling these issues and the experience provided the team with valuable insights and opportunities for improvement in the future. We look forward to applying the lessons learned from this event to future competitions and further advancing the field of sustainable motorsport. Upon returning to School, we were delighted to be announced as The Siemens Sustainability Award Winner for which we received a lovely trophy. Our team stood out for their exceptional application of sustainable engineering practices, dedication to energy efficiency, and holistic approach to reducing environmental impact.

Last week our 4th Form pupils spent 3 nights in Tuscany, staying in the Convento Sant’Agostino in San Gimignano as part of the School’s inaugural 4th Form Retreat. The pupils took part in team-building activities and created a ‘Middle School Pupil Charter’ - a set of guidelines for behaviour, conduct, respect and expectations underpinned by the School’s core values of Unity, Truth and Love. They were able to learn more about the life of St Augustine through the beautiful frescos and experienced a Mass in an authentic Augustinian Chapel. Pupils also enjoyed a trip to the local swimming pool, a day at a waterpark, scaling the dizzy heights of the 177 ft Torre Grossa to witness the breath-taking views, as well as getting to explore the town itself on a ‘Selfie Treasure Hunt’ with plenty of opportunities to try the local delicacies – mainly pizza and gelato!!
